Deploying Outlook 2000Outlook 2000 and Internet Explorer 5Many Microsoft Outlook 2000 features, including HTML-based e-mail messaging, high encryption, and Help, use Microsoft Internet Explorer functionality. To use all of the features of Outlook 2000, it is best to install Internet Explorer 5, which ships with Office 2000. If you don’t want to use Internet Explorer 5, you can change some settings in the Office Custom Installation Wizard to control how Internet Explorer 5 is used in your Office 2000 installation. Deploying Outlook 2000 without Internet Explorer 5By default, Internet Explorer 5 is installed with Office 2000. However, you can use the Office Custom Installation Wizard to prevent Internet Explorer 5 from being installed on users’ computers. Important Outlook 2000 requires at least Internet Explorer 4.01 to be installed in order to function properly. If you choose not to install Internet Explorer 5 when you deploy Outlook 2000, you must install at least Internet Explorer 4.01. Using Outlook 2000 with another Web browserBy default, Outlook 2000 installs Internet Explorer 5 and sets it as the default Web browser. If you prefer to use Netscape Navigator or another Web browser as the default Web browser in your organization, then you can use the Office Custom Installation Wizard to prevent Internet Explorer 5 from being registered as the default Web browser. Installing new versions of Internet ExplorerIt is easy to deploy a new version of Internet Explorer 5 throughout your organization (for example, by installing a service pack) without changing your existing Outlook 2000 installation. If you deployed Office 2000 over the network, all of the Internet Explorer installation files are located in the \IE5 folder on the administrative installation point. You can remove the files and replace them with a new version of Internet Explorer 5. Any user who installs Outlook 2000 from the updated administrative installation point receives the new version of Internet Explorer. Users who have previously installed Outlook 2000 have two options. They can uninstall and reinstall Office 2000 to receive the new Internet Explorer installation, or they can install the updated version of Internet Explorer 5 separately. Preventing the Internet Explorer icon from appearing on the desktopBy default, the Internet Explorer installation included with Office 2000 creates an Internet Explorer icon on the desktop. You can prevent this icon from appearing on users’ desktops by using the Office Custom Installation Wizard. To prevent the Internet Explorer 5 icon from appearing on the desktop
