Upgrading to PowerPoint 2000

Working with PowerPoint 2000 Files and Graphics Formats

Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 users can save presentations in different file and graphics formats. If a presentation includes graphics, PowerPoint 2000 includes most of the graphics filters that users need to import and export graphics that are embedded in or linked to a presentation.

PowerPoint 2000 file formats

The following table identifies the file formats in which PowerPoint 2000 users can save presentations.

File format Description
Presentation (.ppt) Default PowerPoint 97-2000 file format.
Web Page (.htm) HTML format that allows the file to be opened in a Web browser.
PowerPoint 95 (.ppt) Format that PowerPoint 95 can open.
PowerPoint 97-2000 & 95 Presentation (.ppt) Dual file format that PowerPoint 2000, PowerPoint 98, PowerPoint 97, and PowerPoint 95 can open.
PowerPoint 4.0 (.ppt) Format that PowerPoint 4.0 can open.
Design Template (.pot) Template format.
PowerPoint Show (.pps) Slide show format.
Outline/RTF (.rtf) Outline/Rich Text Format (RTF). Text in the presentation is saved, but graphics content is lost.

PowerPoint 2000 graphics formats

Saving PowerPoint 2000 presentations in a graphics format is an ideal solution for users who need to preserve the graphic design of a presentation and to share the presentation with users of applications for which there is no PowerPoint converter.

PowerPoint 2000 users can save presentations in the following graphics formats:

  • Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) (.gif)
  • JPEG File Interchange Format (.jpg)
  • Portable Network Graphics (PNG) (.png)
  • Device-independent bitmap (DIB) (.bmp)
  • Windows Metafile (WMF) (.wmf)
  • Tag Image File Format (TIFF) (.tif)

When a PowerPoint 2000 user saves a presentation in a graphics format, each slide becomes a separate image — including text. The text becomes a graphical text element that a user cannot edit but can move on the slide.

When saving a presentation in a graphics format, a user can export only the active slide or all the slides in the presentation. If the user exports only the active slide, PowerPoint saves the slide in the active folder with the file name that the user specifies. If the user exports all the slides in the presentation, PowerPoint saves each slide as a graphics file in a folder with the file name that the user types in the File name box of the Save As dialog box. Each slide is named Slidex, where x is the slide number.

PowerPoint 2000 graphics filters

If a presentation includes graphics, PowerPoint 2000 uses graphics filters to import and export graphics that are embedded or linked to the presentation.

When a PowerPoint 2000 user clicks the From File command (Insert menu, Picture submenu) to insert a graphic onto a slide, one of the following events occurs:

  • If the graphic is in a format that PowerPoint recognizes (a native format), PowerPoint preserves the graphic in its original format.
  • If the graphic is in a nonnative format but a compatible graphics filter has been installed, PowerPoint converts the graphic to a format that it can open.
  • If the graphic is in a format PowerPoint does not recognize, PowerPoint displays a message and does not convert the graphic.

The following table identifies the PowerPoint 2000 graphics filters that you can install by using Microsoft Office 2000 Setup.
