Server Components of Office Server Extensions

Microsoft Office Server Extensions (OSE) use several components to provide Microsoft Office 2000 users with Web Discussions, Web Subscriptions, and a secure Web publishing environment. These server-based components are:

  • Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) (Windows NT Server and Windows 2000 Server) or Personal Web Server (Windows NT Workstation and Windows 2000 Professional)
  • NTFS file system
  • Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions
  • Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) or Microsoft SQL Server
  • Custom Automation objects
  • Active Server Pages (ASP) pages
  • OSE Notification Service and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) mail server

The following diagram identifies server component interactions on a single Web server running OSE.

Some of the server components can be distributed across separate servers. The following diagram identifies server component interactions using more than one server.
